This piece was created on a heavy-duty canvas. Prior to painting, the entire canvas surface was textured with modeling paste, which makes painting over it difficult - yet the end result is that it adds much more interest. The gallery canvas is 1.5" deep, the sides are painted black (no framing necessary) which gives it a floating look when it's hung.
The hummingbird that visited me TWICE (in my face) only separated by the patio door glass, was memorialized on a heavily textured canvas with purple irises (one of my favorite flowers). The first time it happened, it startled me but the second time it felt like such an honor!
