In November, 2024 I created ONE painting. It was a first for me, painting mixed media on a hard maple panel. I loved painting on a hard surface. No canvas bounce, which means you can be as heavy handed as you'd like. Without a doubt, I'll do it again.
I decided to try it after spending time at the Detroit Institute of Arts Museum. (It's a beautiful place to spend the day, if you've never gone, visit it.) While there I noticed many paintings were created on canvas and linen surfaces, but it it was also clear that many were painted on flat panels and framed. The reason I love deep gallery canvases is because they don't need framing. After they are completed I generally paint the sides black and wire them for hanging, unless they are small and lightweight which can hang from the frame itself. This new painting is 18x24" and will be mounted in a black floater frame which I already have. Many people paint on MDF hardboard panels. When the weather cooperates enough for me to cut it outdoors, I plan to test it out next year. Floater frames are pricey so I would have to look into how I can frame these myself. I know very little about framing but the internet has so much information readily available that it looks like this will be another rabbit hole to go down.
